Why Custom

A template is a template, even if you pay monthly for it

Most small business websites in 2026 are built on Wix, Squarespace, or GoDaddy. The business owner picks a theme, pastes in their content, and pays $15–40/mo for hosting. It looks fine. It loads okay. It works. So why build a custom website instead?

Three reasons. First, templates are slow. Wix and Squarespace inject dozens of scripts and trackers that they need for their business model — you do not benefit from any of them, but your page load and your Core Web Vitals suffer. A hand-coded React site we build loads in under a second on 4G.

Second, template SEO is capped by what the platform allows. Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy are template-based website builders. You pick a theme, drop your content into pre-built blocks, and pay a monthly fee for hosting on their platform. The result looks like a template because it is one — and the SEO is limited by what their platform allows. A Joeckel Design website is hand-coded in React, designed around your business, and has no template constraints. You get a custom design, full SEO control (schema, llms.txt, canonical URLs, structured data), faster page load, and better rankings — for roughly the same monthly price.
Do I own my website?+
You own your content, your domain name, and your customer data. Joeckel Design owns the source code and the hosting infrastructure while you subscribe. If you cancel, your content and customer list are yours to take elsewhere — we help export. The only thing you cannot take is the custom React codebase itself, unless you want to license it (available as a buy-out quote on request).
What is included in the monthly plan?+
Every plan includes: custom website build, hosting on Azure Static Web Apps with a global CDN, SSL certificate, domain support (bring your own or we help you register one), mobile-first responsive design, technical SEO (schema markup, sitemap, robots.txt, canonical URLs, OG tags), an llms.txt file for AI search crawlers, and Google Business Profile setup. Higher tiers (Growth, Pro) add ongoing SEO work, AI integrations, monthly performance reports, and more monthly content updates.
How long does it take to build a website?+
Typical timeline is one to three weeks from the initial call to a live preview URL. Most prospect pitches we send are already built spec sites — we write, design, and deploy in two to three days, then you see the finished product before paying anything. After you say yes, we wire up your domain and go live within 48 hours.
Do you build e-commerce websites?+
Yes — included on the Pro plan ($149/mo). We integrate with Stripe for payment processing, handle product catalogs, shipping, tax, and order management. For larger stores (1,000+ SKUs or complex inventory) we recommend Shopify with custom theming; we can build that too as a custom project.
Can I move hosts or take my site to another developer?+
Yes. Your domain, content, and customer list are yours. The React source code is ours while you subscribe, but we can quote a buy-out fee if you want to own the code outright. Transitioning to another developer is straightforward because we use standard open-source tooling (React, Vite, Tailwind) — any modern web developer can pick it up.
What about SEO? Do I need to pay extra for that?+
Technical SEO is included on every plan (Starter through Pro). Ongoing SEO work — Google Business Profile management, local citations, monthly performance reports, llms.txt maintenance, FAQPage schema updates — is included on Growth and Pro.
